Just 0.1% of all winemakers in the US are black, according 2020 estimates. And even fewer, unsurprisingly, are women. But Justin Trabue wants to flip the script. Justin wants to launch a small-scale organic and biodynamic wine brand sourcing fruit from around the CA coast. She aims to make wine more accessible to black consumers. With five years of industry experience, as well as a degree in wine and viticulture, Justin wants to sell direct to consumers, as well as hosting tastings and workshops. She hopes to use the Fresh Fund proceeds to help with the legal and financial fees associated with setting up a wine business, as well as renting and equipping a small-sized winery facility and paying for her first vintage.
